Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset

Week 4 of Take Care of You: Body, Mind, Spirit blog series

You can have one of two mindsets. A growth one or a fixed one. We all have one or the other. Which mindset we have depends on our upbringing, our circumstances, and often what and how we’ve been taught. It is not surprising, then, that we often have the same mindset as our parents or our most influential teachers. The fact that teachers can have an impact on their students’ mindset is an interesting one. It means that we’re not stuck with a fixed or a growth mindset forever. Instead, we can choose to develop one over the other. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.

What Is A Fixed Mindset?

A person with a fixed mindset believes that they are born with a certain amount of talent. This doesn’t mean they can’t learn new things, but it means they believe that how well they do in life (in school or in their job) is mainly determined by the talent and intelligence they were born with. Working and studying hard, gaining experience, and seeking out the right teachers and mentors have little to no influence about how they will fare.

This greatly limits how much they think they can achieve, but it doesn’t stop there. People with a fixed mindset are more focused on how they are perceived than what they actually get done. They often take the path of least resistance because in their mind, there isn’t much they can do to control.

What Is A Growth Mindset?

A person with a growth mindset on the other hand knows that effort and hard work can help them grow as human beings. This works for all areas of life. They know they can become smarter, more successful, and more efficient. Failure stings, but it doesn’t have the same devastating result as it has with someone who believes there is no room for improvement.

Where you are at today is simply the starting point for your future potential. It is up to each person to see how far they are willing to push the limits to make positive changes. In other words, much of your future is in your own hands.

By now, I’m sure you’ve realized that a growth mindset will serve you better if you want control over your life. It helps you strive for a better life, try harder, and stay motivated when things don’t go your way.

There is a lot you can do to move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

The first step is that realizing there is a lot you can do.

Mindset: Take Your Thoughts Captive

Week 3: Take Care of You: Body, Soul, Spirit blog series

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NLT)

 … take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (23 Corinthians 10:5 NIV)

You might have heard that “attitude is everything.” Indeed, Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.” This is such a powerful statement that really points out how much our attitudes impact our success. The bible talks about being transformed by the way you think and “taking every thought captive.” Most sources seem to agree that mindset (a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world) is very important.

Your mindset can truly make or break you. This is why it is so important to be aware of, and to always be working towards building a healthy thought process. More than ever, people are realizing just how much mental health has an impact on their physical health. While this is a different process for each of us, there are some basic ideas we can all take into consideration on our mental health journeys.

Why You Need To Develop A Growth Mindset

When it comes to personal growth and learning, we can have one of two mindsets. A fixed mindset or a growth mindset. They refer to the underlying beliefs and notions we have about approaching new material and dealing with the unknown.

But what it really boils down to is how you approach the challenges life throws your way.

Do you see them as obstacles and do what you can to avoid them? (Fixed Mindset) Or do you use them as a chance to grow and get better at what it is you do? (Growth Mindset)

That difference is one of the reasons it’s important to develop a growth mindset. It helps you make progress, get better, and – as the name implies – grow as a human being. To put it another way, it’s up to you and the mindset you develop whether you’re stuck where you’re at right now, or whether you can motivate yourself to make progress and move up in the world. I think it’s fair to say that none of us want to feel stuck.

Getting unstuck is of course easier said than done. If you’ve been told this was as far as you can go over and over again, it’s hard to refute that belief. If you’ve been taught, or learned over the years, that hard work and effort rarely pays off, it’s hard to develop that growth mindset. If you have no cheerleaders in your corner or like-minded people around you, it’s hard to make the transition from fixed mindset to growth mindset.

Embrace the challenge the transition brings with it. Come up with a strategy to defeat negative thoughts and negative influences. Find someone who encourages you. Look for a mentor or someone you admire who has beaten the odds and continues to grow. Model their behavior. Notice any negative self-talk and stop it in its track. Write yourself motivating notes and reminders to stay on track and grow. Expect setbacks and make a plan for getting back on track.

The hardest part is starting the transition into a growth mindset. As you start to develop those new skills and habits, it will become easier to look for new solutions, to push a little harder, and to work on continual growth and improvement. Your job is to get the ball rolling. After that momentum starts to kick in to help you on your journey towards developing and maintaining a growth mindset.

Self-Esteem
Speaking or thinking negative thoughts about yourself can lead to a warped self-esteem. When you constantly put yourself down, you destroy your own confidence and this can lead to a lot of problems that make even simple tasks seem impossible. Negative self-talk contributes to anxiety, stress, depression, and more. Instead of continuing these habits and allowing these negative thoughts to run rampant, make an effort to become more aware of when it starts to happen… Pay attention to what trigger these thoughts and feelings about yourself. Once you know your triggers, you can begin to get to the roots of WHY those things trigger you to feel negatively about yourself. This can be done alone, with family/friends, or with a professional therapist. Everyone’s needs are different, so make sure you are handling it with or without whomever you need. When you find the core problem(s), healing and resetting of mental habits can begin.

  • Better yet, develop your God- esteem. Look at who God says you are. Instead of positive affirmations, pick bible verses that remind you of your identity in Christ.

Success
If you constantly tell yourself you can’t do something for whatever reason(s), you will ultimately never do that thing. This won’t be because you were right—it’ll be because you talked yourself out of succeeding at it! However, on the other hand, when you go into something with a positive and “can-do” attitude, you WILL have much better results. Even if you fail, you will have built up your confidence so that you can try again and figure out how you CAN succeed. Belief breeds confidence, and confidence breeds determination. Believe that you can do something, and you WILL find a way to do it!

  • Better yet, develop your God-fidence. Look at the attributes of God and reflect on his goodness.

Your day-to-day life is determined by the direction of your attitude… Make a point to create a routine of positivity at the start of each day. Get yourself in the right mindset when you wake up, and this will help you set the tone for your day. Even when bad things happen—and they will—your attitude will be the deciding factor in whether or not you let those things break you down and steal precious time from your life. Think of yourself like a bottle filled with either water or soda pop… Do you want to explode every time you get shaken? Or would you rather maintain your state of positivity and calm even when life shakes you up?

Exercise Isn’t Just For Muscles

Week 2: Take Care of You; Body, Soul, Spirit Blog series

Most of the time when we think of exercising, we associate it with building muscles or losing weight. However, exercise has many more benefits than those two things! As you will find out below, exercise isn’t just for muscles…

Endorphins
When we exercise, certain chemicals are released in our bodies that make us feel super happy. These are called endorphins; and they are contributors to what is called “runner’s high.” Endorphins are the body’s special way of dealing with the physical toll that exercising has on the body. Another great side effect of exercising regularly is the improvement of brain health—so you can feel better overall all the time, and not just from endorphins! Regular exercise has been found to improve the symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental/emotional health issues. Outside of the physical benefits, sometimes just going for a relaxing walk when you start to feel upset in any way can simply help you get your mind off the situation and re-center yourself.

Sleep
It has been scientifically proven that consistent exercise actually helps us get a better night’s sleep. Just thirty minutes at least of exercise each day can improve your sleep almost immediately! While the endorphins and good feelings we talked about above will make you feel awake and alert for a while; you’ve still exerted yourself in general by exercising at all… This means that your body will be that much more ready to rest when it’s time to sleep. Think of it like a sugar crash—without the sugar and side effects like headaches or stomachaches. Your body got really pumped from the exercise, but then it uses that to help you get a more satisfying and restful sleep!

Lymphatic System

We all know that exercise gets the heart working, and blood flowing. However, even when we don’t move at all, our heart still pumps. This is not so for our lymphatic system. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have an automatic pump to push the fluid through. It depends on our body movements to do its job! Your lymphatic system is responsible for helping filter out and remove any toxins and chemicals from your body. When you have a sedentary lifestyle, this means that all that junk pools throughout your lymph system like a clogged sewage system… This can lead to inflammation, pain, and can also compromise your immune system. By making sure you exercise each day, you are helping your body more efficiently flush out all the ick!

As you can see, exercise has several other positive outcomes other than building muscles and helping with weight loss. Challenge yourself to do something active for at least thirty minutes each day, and see how much it can improve your overall mental and physical health!

5 Ways to Embrace the Season of Giving


The time between Advent and New Year’s Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the true “reason for the season.”


Joining with others in giving back for the blessings that have been bestowed on you is a great way to make it even more joyful and memorable for you (and even more honoring of the great Gift given to us by God).


But just how do you do that? How do you give back without literally taking what you’ve received and handing it over to someone else?


Thankfully, there are several ways you can give and receive the benefits of “giving back.” Consider these ideas:

  1. Visit a children’s hospital. Kids who are sick need to know that they’re loved
    and cared for. You can give them that reassurance by spending time with them
    during this season of giving. Your visits will provide much-needed encouragement
    and bring some special joy into their day.
    – Find out from your local children’s hospital if they have a program which
    allows you to become a mentor to young patients.
    -Make play dates or plan to read stories.
    -Add the children to your social media network so they feel involved.

2. Donate cash, food, clothes, toys, or other gifts. Sometimes the most direct way
to give is to donate cash or goods to a needy individual or organization. Your
contribution can make a meaningful difference in an individual’s life or a
program’s ability to help the masses. It’s easy to embrace the season when you
realize how much you are appreciated!

3. Adopt a pet. Taking an abandoned pet into your home is one of the most
heartwarming things you’ll ever experience! Animals have such a direct way of
showing gratitude by giving back unconditional love and loyalty.

4. Count your blessings. Sometimes all it takes to embrace the season of giving is
sincere appreciation of all the blessings you’ve received. When you take a
moment to look at all you’ve received and achieved, you’ll realize that you have
more than you imagined and can then feel free to share your wealth – financial
and spiritual – with others.

5. Spend precious time with those you love. Precious memories with family
members and other loved ones are worth more than their weight in gold. It’s an awesome feeling to let those closest to you know how important they are to you. That’s probably the best gift you’ll ever give them!

As you can see, the season of giving can allow you time to reflect the love of Christ in the world. Embrace it by choosing your own special way to give back to others while giving thanks for all you’ve received.

Customize the season to fit your life and cater to the things that are really important to you (and to God). Taking this approach enables you to get the most out of this season of giving, and also ensures that each year you can make new memories that you’ll cherish forever

Following God’s Plan to Crush Your Goals

In a blink of an eye, 2021 will be ending and 2022 will be upon us. It will be time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the next. In the world, many will be making New Year’s resolutions- i.e- setting goals.

Yet, many Christians believe that pursuing our goals goes against certain Christian beliefs and counteracts whatever plan God has in store for us. On the contrary – Scriptures encourage us to pursue our goals and achieve success.

Consider these passages from the Bible:

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

1 Chronicles 4:10 “Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”

The Promise of God

In Jeremiah, God tells you there is a plan for you: a wonderful and amazing plan. It’s a plan for success and joy.

Where did God plant that plan? In your heart, of course! God has given you the desire to succeed and manifest His work in this world.

The question is, “How do I find that plan?”

Since God planted the plan in your heart, look in your heart. Look prayerfully.

Try these strategies to discover this plan:

  1. What is your passion? Your passion holds the dreams which God planted in your heart. Follow your passion.

  2. Are you pushing it away? Is there something niggling in the back of your mind you’re trying to avoid? Bring it to the forefront. Look at it clearly. This may contain God’s plan for you that your ego wants to avoid. Your ego is that part of you that wants your will, not God’s.

  3. The “What then?” trick. Ask yourself, “Once I achieve that goal, what then would I want?” Keep asking “what then” until you have this deep ah-ha experience that says, “That’s it. That’s the ultimate plan for my life.”

Trust in God’s Promise

God’s not going to give you the entire plan at once.

After all, you might get scared if you discovered God wanted you to begin a world-wide coaching business that would require writing three books a year for the next 10 years, managing a staff of 100 people, and others being jealous of you or speaking untruths about you.

God doesn’t seem to write with straight lines. The path may meander about, especially when you interject your own will. God then re-writes the path and you’re set again.

The key is trusting that God has everything in hand, even when you can’t see more than 10 feet in front of you.

The Prayer of Jabez

Once you know the direction you’re going, even if you only know the first step or two, let God know you’re ready.

Consider these ideas found in the story of Jabez:

  1. Jabez asked God to bless me and enlarge my territory.”  You can ask God to:

    1. Bless you with the wisdom, knowledge, and resources needed to accomplish His plan for you.

    1. Bless your business, so it expands in every way according to God’s will for you.

  2. Then Jabez requested, Let your hand be with me…”

    1. Ask God to guide and direct you, to inspire you, and let you know each succeeding step.

    1. Tell God that you’ll listen to His messages to you. Stay in communication with God through prayer.

  3. Lastly, Jabez asked, “… keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.”

    1. Ask for God’s protection in every area of your life – for you, your family, and your business.

    1. Implied in your request is that your actions will be according to God’s word.

  4. Then, you’re told that God granted his request.

    1. God promised through Jeremiah that He has plans for you: “… plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

When you’re living God’s plan for you and asking for assistance, the goals you set will be according to that plan. Your goals are God’s goals for you. You can crush those goals and all your future ones as well.

I can will it, but I can’t do it. I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. (Romans 7:17- 20 MSG)

Hydrate—Why We Need Water

Part 1 of series ” Taking Care of You: Body, Soul and Spirit”

Water is more than just something we need on a hot day… Water is VITAL to a healthy and properly functioning body. Staying hydrated is a very important part of a healthy mind and body. Keep reading to find out just a few reasons why we need water.

Strong Muscles
Without water, your muscles can’t get the oxygen they need that is normally carried through your blood. When this happens, your muscles can’t perform at peak efficiency—leaving you more easily fatigued and sore. Be sure to stay well hydrated to help your muscles be strong, and to avoid painful straining and cramps!

Mental Health
When your body isn’t getting the water it needs, it has a huge impact on your brain. Focus, thought processes, emotional state, and more are all directly connected to brain function. Being hydrated can help reduce brain fog, stress, and anxiety by helping your mind stay clearer, faster, and calmer.

Skin Care
Water helps the body flush out toxins and chemicals from the body. These are often picked up by our skin products and the foods we eat. So when we aren’t drinking enough water, these substances can sit in our skin for a long time… This can contribute to skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, and more. We need water to help our skin be clearer, and able to properly flush out any ick that’s seeped into it.

Blood Pressure
Dehydration can contribute to both spiking and falling blood pressure. This can be particularly dangerous to those who may have certain medical conditions… By not drinking enough water, your blood pressure can drop because of the lowered blood volume. This starves your body of much needed oxygen and nutrients, and can result in shock.


On the other end of the spectrum, lack of water can lead to heightened blood pressure as well. When the body is dehydrated, the kidneys go into self-preservation mode, and try to get more water into the body by re-filtering urine rather than passing it. This creates a concentration of a hormone called vasopressin—which can cause a spike in blood pressure and constricted blood vessels.

These are just a few reasons why we need water in order to have a healthy mind and body. A good rule of thumb to be sure you stay hydrated is to drink half of your weight in ounces each day. For example, if you weighed one hundred pounds, you would need fifty ounces of water a day to be properly hydrated. Until you’ve developed good water-drinking habits, keep track of your water intake each day, and figure out how you can improve so you can have a healthier lifestyle.
